School Flooring Selection Guide: PVC Vinyl for Education Environments

1. Main Corridors & Circulation

The highest-traffic zone in any school. Thousands of footsteps daily create visible wear patterns. Requirements:

  • Product: Homogeneous vinyl, 2.0 mm, Group T abrasion (EN 660-2)
  • Fire: BS 476 Class 1 / EN 13501-1 Bfl-s1 — corridors are evacuation routes
  • Slip: R10 minimum; R11 embossed at entrance lobbies where rain water enters
  • Colour: Medium tone with directional marble or fleck pattern to hide scuffs and traffic lanes
  • Welding: Heat-welded seams prevent dirt accumulation and water ingress from wet shoes

2. Classrooms

Desk and chair movement causes concentrated wear. Requirements:

  • Product: Homogeneous vinyl, 2.0 mm, Group P or T abrasion (depending on student age)
  • Acoustics: Consider acoustic-backed variant (3.2 mm) for improved noise reduction — important for modern open-plan teaching spaces where impact noise from chairs and footsteps disturbs adjacent classrooms
  • Colour: Warm, calm tones; avoid distracting patterns
  • Maintenance: PUR surface means no waxing — major maintenance cost saving versus VCT

3. Science Laboratories

Chemical spills and Bunsen burner risks. Requirements:

  • Product: Homogeneous vinyl, 2.0 mm, chemical-resistant formulation
  • Chemical resistance: Must resist dilute acids, alkalis, solvents, and iodine
  • Fire: BS 476 Class 1 non-negotiable — open flames present
  • Welding: Heat-welded seams + cove skirting for spill containment

4. Sports Halls & Gymnasiums

Impact, ball bounce, and athlete safety. Requirements:

  • Product: Sports-grade homogeneous vinyl, 3.5-6.5 mm thickness
  • Shock absorption: ≥25% (EN 14904)
  • Ball bounce: ≥90% (EN 12235)
  • Slip: R10-R11, depending on sport
  • Surface: Factory-applied PUR sports coating for grip consistency
  • Line marking: Permanent court markings can be incorporated into the floor design

5. Washrooms & Changing Rooms

Constant moisture, slip hazard. Requirements:

  • Product: Homogeneous vinyl, 2.0 mm, embossed R11 finish
  • Welding: Heat-welded + cove skirting, floor-to-wall welded junction
  • Drainage: Floor falls to 1:80 towards gully; welded joint at gully connection
  • Colour: Light colour for cleanliness perception

BS 476 Class 1 certifies that the flooring will not propagate flame spread along its surface, providing critical evacuation time.
