PVC Welding Rods

The fit is set by the groove, not by the flooring thickness. Seams are grooved to about two-thirds of the flooring thickness and to a maximum width of 3.5 mm on commercial sheet, so a 4.0 mm rod seats slightly proud of the groove and is then trimmed flush with the surface (ASTM F1516). Round rods are the standard choice for hot-air speed welding of straight seams; triangular rods seat into a V-shaped groove and are typically used on narrower seams and repair work. Both 2.0 mm and 2.5 mm commercial sheet take the same 4.0 mm rod. Trim in two passes with a quarter-moon knife after the weld has cooled completely, and check that the finished seam is level with the flooring.

Approximately 0.07 kg of welding rod is needed per square metre of flooring for standard 2 m wide sheet installation. One 100 m coil (approximately 1.6 kg) covers roughly 20-25 m². Add 10% for waste, corners, and start/stop points.

Because melting point and shrinkage vary between PVC compounds, we recommend approving a sample and welding a scrap seam before the full installation.

Vinyl welding joins two sheets of vinyl flooring with a matching PVC rod: a hot-air gun melts the rod and the groove together so they fuse into one material. It is also called vinyl floor welding or heat welding. The result is a continuous, watertight surface with no separate bonding layer — which is why welded vinyl flooring is specified for hospitals, cleanrooms, laboratories and wet areas.
