Heat welding is what separates a professional PVC sheet flooring installation from a basic glue-down job. The process fuses adjacent sheets into a single, continuous, waterproof surface — critical for healthcare, cleanroom, laboratory, and wet-area applications. When done correctly, a welded seam has tensile strength equal to or greater than the flooring material itself. When done poorly, it fails within months. Here's how to get it right.
Why Heat Weld?
Cold-seam techniques (liquid welding agents, butt-jointing with tape) are faster but create a weaker joint. They are not acceptable for:
- Healthcare facilities (infection control requirement under HTM 08-02)
- Wet areas (kitchens, bathrooms, laboratories)
- Cleanrooms and pharmaceutical facilities
- Any environment requiring a fully sealed, waterproof floor surface
Heat welding creates a homogeneous fused joint — there is no separate "layer" of bonding material. The welding rod and the flooring sheet become one material at the molecular level.
Equipment Checklist

Step-by-Step Welding Procedure
Step 1: Allow Adhesive to Cure
The adhesive must cure for at least 2 hours before welding. Welding too soon traps solvent vapours beneath the sheet, which expand under heat and cause blistering along the seam. In humid conditions, extend to 4 hours.
Step 2: Cut the Groove
Using a grooving tool, cut a clean V-shaped channel along the entire seam. The groove should be approximately 2/3 of the flooring thickness deep. For 2.0mm homogeneous vinyl, this is about 1.3-1.4mm. The groove must be clean and free of debris — vacuum the groove after cutting. A U-shaped groove (incorrect) will not hold the rod properly.
Step 3: Set Welding Temperature
The correct temperature depends on the flooring thickness and the welding rod composition:

Always test on a scrap piece before starting the actual installation. The rod should emerge from the nozzle molten but not smoking. Smoking indicates the temperature is too high — reduce by 10-20°C and retest.
Step 4: Pre-Heat the Starting Point
Hold the welding gun nozzle at the start of the groove for 3-5 seconds to pre-heat the flooring. This ensures proper initial fusion and prevents a cold start that could lift later.
Step 5: Weld the Seam
- Insert the welding rod into the nozzle guide. The rod feeds through the nozzle and is heated simultaneously with the groove.
- Position the nozzle at a 45-degree angle and begin moving forward at a steady pace — approximately 3-4 metres per minute.
- Apply gentle pressure to the rod — it should feed smoothly into the groove. Too much pressure creates a lumpy weld; too little leaves voids.
- The welded bead should be slightly proud of the floor surface. If it is recessed, you are moving too fast or the temperature is too low.
- Continue in one smooth motion. Stopping mid-seam creates a visible joint in the finished weld.
Step 6: Trim the Weld
Trimming is done in two passes:
- Rough trim (immediately): While the rod is still warm and soft, use a straight trimming knife to cut away the bulk of the excess material. Cut approximately 1mm above the floor surface. Do not cut flush at this stage — the rod will shrink slightly as it cools.
- Finish trim (after cooling): Once the rod has fully cooled (30-60 seconds), use a quarter-moon skiving blade to trim flush with the floor surface. Hold the blade flat against the floor and cut in one smooth pulling motion. Do not saw back and forth.
Step 7: Roll the Seam
Immediately after finish trimming, roll the welded seam with a hand seam roller. This compresses the weld and creates a perfectly smooth, invisible joint. Roll in both directions along the seam.
Common Welding Mistakes
- Temperature too low: The rod does not fuse properly and will lift from the groove within weeks. The surface may look acceptable but the bond is weak. Test by picking at the edge of the weld with a fingernail — if it lifts, temperature was too low.
- Temperature too high: Causes smoking, discolouration, and burning of the flooring edge. The weld will be brittle and prone to cracking.
- Inconsistent speed: Creates an uneven weld with thick and thin sections. The skiving blade will catch on thick sections, causing gouges in the floor surface.
- Welding too soon after adhesive: Trapped solvent vapours create blisters along the seam. Allow at least 2 hours (4 hours in humid conditions).
- Wrong rod profile: Using round rod in a V-groove for homogeneous vinyl creates insufficient contact area. Triangular rod profiles are specifically designed for the V-groove geometry.
- Skipping the pre-heat: The first few centimetres of weld will be cold and weak. Always pre-heat the starting point for 3-5 seconds.
- Not testing first: Every flooring batch and welding rod batch has slight variations. Always test on scrap material before welding the actual installation.
