What is the difference between aluminum and PVC stair nosing?

Aluminum stair nosing with carbide-grit anti-slip inserts is designed for heavy-duty public staircases in transport hubs, stadiums, and commercial buildings. PVC stair nosing is colour-matched to the flooring, more economical, and ideal for schools, offices, and healthcare where aesthetics and moderate traffic are the priorities.

Is stair nosing required by building codes?

Yes. Most international building codes (including BS 8300, ADA, and IBC) require stair nosings to provide visual contrast and slip resistance at step edges in public and commercial buildings. GREEN POINT stair nosing includes a contrasting colour strip option for BS 8300 compliance covering visually impaired access requirements.

How is stair nosing installed?

Aluminum stair nosing is mechanically fixed with screws and wall plugs into the stair substrate. PVC stair nosing is adhered with acrylic contact adhesive. Self-adhesive PVC nosing is available for quick retrofits. All types should be installed after the flooring is laid, with the nosing overlapping the floor edge.

What width of stair nosing do I need?

Standard widths are 50 mm and 60 mm, measured across the visible surface of the nosing. 50 mm suits most commercial stairs. 60 mm provides a wider visual contrast strip and is commonly specified for healthcare and public buildings. Both widths available in 2 m/pc or 50 m/roll.
