The Fundamental Difference
Both are PVC vinyl sheet flooring, but their internal structure defines everything: durability, appearance, cost, and where they belong.
Homogeneous vinyl is manufactured with pigment and pattern distributed through the entire thickness of the material (typically 2.0 mm). When you scratch it, the colour underneath is identical to the surface. Heat-welded seams fuse into a single monolithic surface.
Heterogeneous vinyl is a 5-layer sandwich: UV-cured PUR coating, 0.2-0.5 mm clear PVC wear layer, high-definition printed decor film, fibreglass-reinforced core, and balanced foam backing. The print layer delivers photorealistic wood, stone, and textile aesthetics that homogeneous cannot achieve.

Installation Comparison
Both types use the same installation methodology: full-spread acrylic adhesive on a prepared subfloor (levelled with self-levelling compound), sheet layout, grooving, hot-air welding at 350-400°C, and trimming. Installation labour is comparable.
Key difference: homogeneous vinyl requires more careful handling of cut edges during transport and layout, as any edge damage remains visible. Heterogeneous vinyl's multi-layer structure provides some forgiveness during handling.
Cost Analysis: Price vs Lifecycle
On a per-square-metre basis, heterogeneous vinyl is typically 20-30% cheaper. But for heavy-traffic environments specified for 15+ years, the lifecycle cost equation shifts:
- Heterogeneous vinyl at ~15 years: replace once = double the cost over 25 years
- Homogeneous vinyl at 25+ years: install once, maintain, done
- Add downtime costs, waste removal, and business disruption during replacement
For permanent public buildings, transport hubs, and acute healthcare: homogeneous is usually the better lifecycle investment.
Maintenance Comparison
Both types are low-maintenance. Dry mopping or vacuuming daily, damp mopping weekly with pH-neutral cleaner. Neither requires waxing or polishing.
Homogeneous vinyl can be mechanically deep-cleaned and refinished multiple times over its life (rotary scrubber with red pad), restoring the surface without exposing a different colour underneath. Heterogeneous vinyl should not be aggressively scrubbed, as the wear layer is finite.
