The Complete PVC Flooring System: Why You Need More Than Just Flooring

Flooring is only half the job. Here's why every component in the installation system matters.

When contractors specify PVC flooring, they often focus exclusively on the sheet material itself — thickness, wear layer, fire rating, colour. But a floor is only as good as its weakest component. The finest homogeneous vinyl sheet will fail within weeks if installed with the wrong adhesive over an unprepared subfloor. This article explains why the complete system matters.

The 6 Components of a Professional PVC Floor Installation

1. Subfloor Preparation: Primer & Self-Levelling Compound

Concrete subfloors are porous, dusty, and rarely perfectly level. Without preparation, adhesive is absorbed unevenly into the substrate, leading to weak spots and eventual delamination. A concrete primer seals the surface and controls moisture, while a self-levelling compound creates the perfectly smooth substrate (tolerance ≤2mm over 2m) required for sheet vinyl. Unitech self-levelling compounds are formulated for compatibility with our acrylic and PU adhesives, eliminating the risk of chemical interaction between products from different manufacturers.

2. Adhesive: The Bond That Holds Everything Together

Not all adhesives are created equal. The choice depends on the flooring type, substrate, traffic load, and moisture exposure:

Acrylic DispersionWater-based, low VOC. For homogeneous and heterogeneous vinyl in general commercial areas. Coverage 200-250 m²/15kg. Open time 20-30 min.
PU 2-ComponentHigh-strength for wet areas, heavy rolling loads (hospital beds, pallet trucks). Coverage 80-100 m²/6kg kit. Essential for healthcare and industrial.
Pressure-SensitiveFor SPC planks and LVT. Allows repositioning during installation. Tack-free in 30 min. Coverage 80-100 m²/15kg.

Using a generic adhesive instead of the flooring manufacturer's recommended product is the single most common cause of installation failure. Adhesives are chemically formulated for specific PVC compounds — plasticizer migration, discolouration, and bond failure are real risks with mismatched products.

3. Welding Rods: The Invisible Seal

Heat-welded seams are what transform a collection of vinyl sheets into a single, continuous, waterproof surface. The welding rod must be made from the same PVC compound as the flooring to fuse properly — a chemically different rod will not bond. Unitech welding rods are manufactured from the identical compound used in our flooring products, and are available in 200+ colours for perfect colour matching.

Did you know? A properly welded seam in homogeneous vinyl flooring has a tensile strength equal to or greater than the sheet material itself. The welded joint is not the weak point — it is the strongest part of the floor.

4. Skirting & Cove Profiles

The floor-wall junction is the most vulnerable point in any vinyl floor installation. Without skirting, moisture and debris accumulate at the edges, causing adhesive failure and edge lifting. For healthcare and cleanroom environments, cove skirting is heat-welded to the flooring, creating a fully sealed, bacteria-proof transition. Unitech PVC skirting is extruded from the same colour compound as our flooring — 200+ colours, exact match guaranteed.

5. Stair Nosing & Edge Protection

Stair edges endure concentrated foot traffic and impact. A stair nosing profile protects the vulnerable leading edge while providing essential slip resistance. Unitech offers aluminum heavy-duty (carbide-grit insert, R11) and PVC standard (rubber insert, colour-matched) options. Available in 2m lengths or 50m rolls for project-scale efficiency.

6. Installation Tools: The Right Equipment Matters

Professional tools directly affect installation quality and speed:

  • Hot-air welding gun — Minimum 1,600W with precise temperature control (350-400°C)
  • Grooving tool — Creates the V-groove for welding rod insertion
  • Notched trowel — Correct notch size (A2/B1) for even adhesive spread
  • Floor roller — 50-75kg segmented roller to eliminate air bubbles
  • Trimming knife & skiving blade — For flush weld finishing
  • Seam roller — For final weld smoothing

The Single-Supplier Advantage

Why source from one manufacturer? Three reasons:

  1. Chemical compatibility: Every component — primer, adhesive, flooring, welding rod — is formulated to work together. No guessing, no compatibility testing, no finger-pointing between suppliers when something fails.
  2. Colour consistency: When flooring, skirting, and welding rods come from the same factory, colour matching is exact. Specifiers notice mismatched junctions immediately.
  3. Logistics efficiency: One purchase order. One container. One quality standard to audit. One point of contact for warranty. This saves procurement time and shipping cost compared to juggling five different suppliers.
